How Often Should You Pump Your Septic Tank?
The EPA says most household septic tanks should be pumped about every three to five years, and the system should be inspected by a professional at least every three years. Systems with electrical float switches, pumps or mechanical parts should be inspected more often, generally once a year (EPA).
What affects the interval
- How many people live in the home
- Tank size
- Water use (laundry, long showers, leaking toilets)
- Garbage disposal use, which adds solids
- What goes down the drain: wipes, grease and chemicals shorten the interval
Signs you're overdue
- Slow drains or gurgling throughout the house
- Sewage odor near the tank or field
- Standing water or unusually green grass over the drain field
- Backups in the lowest fixtures
Keep a record
Ask the pumper to write down the date, the tank size and the sludge and scum depths. That record helps the next inspector, and it helps buyers if you sell.
